"The Saltee Tango", CD single number 5, in Mongrel

Look. When people write about bands like The Coral saying that their songs sound like sea shanties, it's just something they say. They're just trying to get across the idea that The Coral's sound is completely off the wall. They're not suggesting that other bands should go out and start recording songs that sound like "Arrr..." actuall sea shanties. The Saltee Tango is pure codology, as my old national school teacher would say. Pure codology lads. On a more positive note, the B-side (a cover of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, which was recorded, I'm guessing, after about fifteen pints of wife beater) is a work of genius which, on its own, lifts my overall rating for this single to 99%

[Stoat review-of-review: ah lookit, from now on the approved list of bands to which Stoat may be compared is: Pixies, Tom Waits, Talking Heads, REM. Any reviewer that wants to mention anyone else should appply in writing 30 days before publication. Dammit, we were writing yo-ho-ho songs probably before The Coral were even born. Hmmmph. Dunno what to make of out the glowing review about the b-side, or the 99% rating, which is far higher than any other record gets. Spose the fact that Mongrel is the successor to The Slate (a magazine which had the wholehearted support of Stoat, we even took out ads in it) means the reviews need to be looked at in a certain way. ? of 10]
